Elevating Staff Minority Groups: Accountability in Action

ELEVATING STAFF MINORITY GROUPS: ACCOUNTABILITY IN ACTION

Accounting MOVE Project special presentation: Course 1 of 4
Course Description

Accountability is the essential driver of unity and change as diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts become more urgent and nuanced. Tricia Bencich, Senior Manager at Moss Adams, the Founding Sponsor of the Accounting MOVE Project, outlines steps they are taking in the wake of the social change events of 2020 to elevate the inclusion of staff who are members of smaller ethnic minority groups, such as Asians and Native Americans. The Moss Adams talent team designed its Forum W culture change initiative, which has forged industry-leading innovations for advancing women and propelled women to 27% of Moss Adams partners and principals.

Key Points:

  • All employers must formulate authentic responses to issues of societal and workplace equity

  • Employees, potential recruits, and business and community partners expect both accountability for past and current inequities and proactive responses to current and emerging equity and inclusion expectations

  • Firms build credibility through the context of accountability

Learning Objectives:

  • Recall how Moss Adams designed an intentional, consistent, and public accountability for its diversity, equity and inclusion efforts through publicly released reports

  • Determine how to design, then consistently implement, focused accountability for DEI results by office

  • Determine how to cultivate a firm reputation that can withstand unpredictable current events

About the Mini-Summit: The Accounting MOVE Project presents the 2021 Recovery Reset

As firms quickly regain momentum in the COVID-19 recovery, they have a chance to re-center diversity, inclusion, and equity priorities and programs to accelerate the advancement of women and women of color. Joanne has written extensively for consumer and business publications, including the Chicago Tribune, Chief Investment Officer, Crain’s Chicago Business, Crain’s New York Business, Working Woman, Working Mother, Inc., USNews.com, and many others. She has authored seven books: four on business growth and three on family travel. The Career Lattice was published in mid-2012 by McGraw Business. Cleaver is a member of 85 Broads, the American Society of Journalists and Authors, and contributed pro bono professional services to the Women’s Business Development Center in Chicago.

Designing the groundbreaking Working Woman Top 25 Companies for Executive Women list in 1998 and managing it for five more project cycles led her to develop the proprietary MOVE methodology that equips groups to advocate for women in their industries. This methodology stresses the business imperative for recruiting, retaining, and advancing women because more women mean more sales, profits, and growth. MOVE is the standard for promoting women in three industries.

Because facts don’t speak for themselves, Joanne and the Wilson-Taylor team help clients develop compelling, timely messages and deliver those messages to key audiences through media interviews, social media, bylined articles, opinion pieces, and other modes of strategic outreach.
